What is Dithyramb?

Dithyramb is a short poem with irregular strain, a statement, or a piece of writing in an exalted, impassioned style, usually in praise of a particular subject. The word comes from the greek "dithyrambos," and it was the name for a wild and irregular poem honoring Dyonysus, the god of wine.

The form was known as early as the 7th century bc in Greece, where an improvised lyric was sung by banqueters under the leadership of a man who, according to the poet Archilochus, was “wit-stricken by the thunderbolt of wine.”

In the 19th century and forward, dithyrambs appear frequently in classical music, as well in vocal as instrumental compositions. Dithyrambs are rare in English language literature, appearing more frequently in European literature.
